Location

Week 8 and this weeks task was to write a proposal to the theme Location within the groups formed. I was in a group with Jetha and Aishiu.

Mindmap

The first thing as a group, we created a mind map in order to get all the ideas out on the paper and then chose one of them.

For the location brief, our proposal is based around generating surreal locations, to create an experience the viewer feels is ideal or intriguing to them and they can experience it fully. The idea is that a viewer will be able to create a text or sketch-based input which AI then understands and generates a surreal image for; using deepdream-esque technology but for a more engrossing but slightly more realistic experience. The Google Deep Dream generator is a computer vision program that uses a convolutional (specifically designed to process pixel data) neural network (a machine learning from examples and learning units are intertwined and feed each other) to ‘find and enhance patterns in images via algorithmic pareidolia, creating a psychedelic appearance in the over-processed images. Rather than have a result which is completely surreal like that, it will be a little more practical and take the audience to a different place that looks a little less processed and does not actually exist, like a landscape which is upside down. There will also be a vast database of images to choose from to create the setting. A prompt of ‘inside the moon’ will create a certain type of image as AI understands it, and the result will appear on a curved, large screen to be partially immersive. It will also be animated and constantly moving so that the viewer is absorbed in that image and it feels more like an art installation than a screen with a random picture on it. Some similar works that we draw inspiration from are Strange Days: Memories of The Future and Ryoji Ikeda’s immersive dynamic exhibitions. It might also be a Virtual Reality where one can fully explore the environment they’ve generated, like walking around on an upturned beach. While this project was initially proposed to be a larger installation or VR, it could even be a website that focuses solely on location like google maps, but with an artistic and AI touch; where the viewer will generate images that are ideal and interesting to them but with the option to introduce specifics using a simple photoshop like software.

We have then researched what kind of screens we would use for the exhibition. The link is provided in the powerpoint. Also we had a look at website which generates pictures of the inside objects. The link is provided as well.

We have also added some pictures to show how we would like our exhibition to look like.

Examples

The last slide in the power point presents the layout of the exhibition. We have all created our own layout and put them in one slide.

This is the link to the power point:

The feedback: Everyone liked the idea but there were some concerns such as: how long would it take to create own dream location and how long can one be in that room, can other people come an join our dream location. Also when creating the location would each object need to be designed or can we use already designed products.
