It is week one, and the task is to create an artist response to the No Ghost Just A shell project by Pierre Huyghe.
The artists Pierre and Philippe Parreno came together and bought a the copy right of a character form a cyber punk manga written by Douglas Gordon. Pierre gathered thirteen artist and gave them three years to work on this project so they started to create work starring a generic virtual avatar named AnnLee. Through out those years the character AnnLee has now been exposed to variety of mediums and her shell have been presented in many museums all over the world. One of the works that I really like was Huyghe’s six-minute animation One Million Kingdoms (2001).
I got inspired by watching a video of AnnLee ( In Parreno’s Anywhere Out of the World (2000). In the clip she stated that she’s just a shell and she doesnt belong to anybody. In the video she was holding a picture of herself but in a different medium, a cartoon (Ghost in the Shell (1898). I liked the idea of her talking about herself in third person. I wanted to continue the series in a way. I created a version on Ann Lee in oil paint and she is holding a picture of that video where she talked about herself. She looks sad and serious because that is how I saw the caracheter to be presented by many artists. She also has that signature purple hair which is also a signature looks to Ann Lee. I have used oil paint, this is because I found it the most comfortable medium to work with and to finish the piece off i used black pen to outline everything so the details would be seen. I have not yet considered her personality or whom she might be when created alive, the serious expression on her face could give an expression that she sad about life but that could not be the case. It could be the opposite, because at the end of the day Ann Lee is anything we want it to be.
The process of my work:
Feedback- It is important to have a balance with the mediums I’m comfortable with, but also explore other ideas. Through a group discussion I have explored the inner side of Ann Lee. Which made me think of how she could be presented in different mediums and be more accessible to others. Creating a instagram page or even drawing her body and making her look like this generation whom ever it might be, was one other ideas I came up with. To explore such an idea I could be looking at some references that has been suggested to me by my class; Mikeila, Hatsine Miku, Adams Familly(Wednesday).
